Debate in Books, Funding Deadline

The much-anticipated debate between former President Trump and Vice President Harris took place as scheduled this past week, and most observers rated it a win for the Vice President. On several occasions, the Vice President seemed to goad the former President on issues, and on each occasion, he seemed to take the bait.

It will take a few weeks before polling indicates if the debate had any impact on voters.

Fiscal deadline

The current fiscal year ends at midnight on September 30, and to avoid a government shutdown, Congress needs to pass a so-called Continuing Resolution (CR) before the deadline. House Speaker Johnson had crafted a CR that extended the shutdown deadline until March 28 of next year, and attached a Republican bill, the SAFE Act, designed to require proof of US citizenship to register to vote. The idea has nearly unanimous Democratic opposition, so the fate of the CR was already very uncertain.

However, the Speaker then ran into opposition from a handful of the most conservative House Republicans, who don’t like CRs as they maintain current spending levels – and they want to reduce spending. With only a four-seat majority, this Republican opposition meant that he couldn’t pass the bill, so he withdrew it, and on Wednesday, he sent the House home until next week. Obviously, September 30 is fast approaching.
