Trump vs. Harris, House Goes Home

Last Sunday, the political world was shaken by the announcement by President Biden that he would not accept the Democratic Presidential nomination. The President then went on to endorse his Vice President, Kamala Harris.  Harris quickly consolidated her position and is now seen as the presumptive Democratic nominee.

VP Harris must now select a running mate, and that likely needs to be done in the next 10 days.  Speculation on her choice has focused on a group of Democratic Governors in swing states along with Arizona Senator Mark Kelly who brings an impressive resume that includes service as a Navy pilot and an astronaut.

The U.S. House of Representatives had hoped to break the cycle of delayed action on budget and an annual Continuing Resolution (CR) to avoid a federal government shutdown. This week, however, they gave up on passing appropriations bills for the new fiscal year that begins on October 1.  The House decided not to return next week to work on spending bills, and instead have started their August break in July. Representatives return to DC to reconvene on September 9.

The debate among Republicans is no longer whether there will be a CR, but how long it will last.
