Shutdown and China in spotlight

The government shutdown continues for another week, but cracks in the Democratic opposition to open the government are beginning to show. On Thursday, two more Democratic Senators from Georgia broke from Leader Chuck Schumer and voted to pay essential federal workers such as flight controllers and TSA agents who are forced to work without pay. That’s on top of the three Democrats who have broken ranks in the past, which brings the number of dissenting Democrats to five. That’s still not enough; eight are needed to stop the filibuster and open the government.

With both food programs and health insurance needing money to serve constituents, pressure continues to build to pass the House-approved Continuing Resolution (CR).

China

On Thursday, the White House confirmed that Trump and Xi would meet on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) meeting. These bilateral Presidential meetings are usually well-staffed ahead of time, making some sort of announcement on trade a real possibility.  There are rumors of an agreement on soybeans and despite talks with other nations, the U.S. will continue to need to import rare earth minerals from China.

While the best-laid plans can fall apart, at this point the meeting in South Korea is scheduled for Thursday. Trump leaves for Asia today with his first stop in Japan where he will meet with the country’s newly elected first-woman prime minister, Sanae Takaichi.
