Shutdown Continues, Trump to Meet Putin

On Thursday, the Senate for the tenth time tried to open the government by passing the House-approved Continuing Resolution (CR) that requires 60 votes in the Senate to overcome the Democratic filibuster and proceed with the bill. The vote was again 51 to 45 with the same three Democrats voting with the Republicans.

There is growing frustration as the shutdown continues with no end in sight. There is increased concern that the shutdown could run into November. Senators left town after the Thursday vote for a long weekend back home. It’s possible that hearing constituents’ frustration will move the needle and allow enough Democrats to join Republicans and end the shutdown.

Ukraine

President Trump, after successfully mediating a truce in the Israel-Gaza War, turned his attention to the war in Ukraine. He promised to end it during the 2024 presidential campaign. He has expressed frustration with Russian President Vladimir Putin that increased after an unsuccessful meeting in Alaska.

Today, Ukrainian President Zelensky is at the White House. Yesterday, the administration announced that Putin and Trump had talked and agreed that their teams would meet next week, and that a date would be set for the two presidents to meet in Budapest at a date to be determined by the two negotiating teams. The U.S. team will be headed by Secretary of State Marco Rubio.

China

Watch for headlines in the coming weeks as diplomats from China and the U.S. talk about the upcoming meeting of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) scheduled for the end of the month in South Korea. Leaders of both countries are scheduled to attend, and it would provide an obvious opportunity for Trump and Xi to talk about the trade issues that have emerged as part of Trump’s tariff policy.
