Johnson Elected Speaker

After a lengthy rollcall vote, the Republican majority in the U.S. House elected Louisiana Representative Mike Johnson to be Speaker of the House for the 119th Congress. This Congress, along with the incoming President Trump, will give the Republican Party the so-called trifecta to put their mark on government policy.

Johnson’s victory is also a win for Trump, who came out for the Speaker’s re-election bid prior to Christmas. There can be little doubt that the President-elect’s support was critical to tamp down unhappiness from some of the most conservative members of the House Republican Conference.

However, the vote of 218 for Johnson and 215 for Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries with one Republican not supporting Johnson demonstrated how small the margin is for Johnson and Trump to get the new President’s agenda through the House. Under House rules, a motion dies on a tie vote, and indeed the House majority will temporarily get smaller, as two House Republicans will leave to join the Trump Administration. Special elections to fill the three Republican vacancies ─ the third is the empty seat of former Member Matt Gaetz ─ won’t happen until early April.

As seen today, Trump is the single most unifying force in the Republican Party, and he will need to use all his “art of the deal” skills to get his programs through the narrowly divide House.
