We have a busy week ahead. Congress faces a government shutdown deadline a week from today on November 17, and Presidents Biden and Xi are scheduled to meet next Wednesday.

The Congress faces another government shutdown deadline, with no game plan on how to keep the government open.  While the simplest course of action would be another Continuing Resolution (CR) to get legislators past the holidays, the Freedom Caucus Republicans in the House are pushing for budget cuts as part of any CR. Developing a strategy to achieve this is made more complicated by the Republicans being led in the House by a new Speaker who has not held a Leadership position prior to becoming Speaker.

The Speaker’s Office has announced that the Leadership plans to release the text of the House Republican proposal sometime tomorrow.  The Saturday release date is required to meet the House rule for a 72-hour notice before a vote.  Whatever the House passes needs to win approval from both the Democratic Senate and the White House. This should make it an interesting budget week, as the members of Congress will want to leave town to be home with their families for Thanksgiving.
