1 "Washed Out" Stocks

During a painful drawdown after tariff announcements on April 2, Fundstrat Head of Research Tom Lee began writing about the potential opportunities of stocks that he described as “washed out” such as Tesla and MicroStrategy.

Lee explicitly views washed out stocks as different from being merely oversold. To assess whether a company is oversold or has been sold to the point where there is, for practical purposes, “no more stock left to sell,” Lee looks for stocks that have hit 52-week lows, bounced, and then fallen again, but to a low that is higher than the previous low and with lower trading volume. These arguably represent better opportunity than stocks that are merely oversold.

3 Gold

Many think of gold as a hedge against inflation, but Fundstrat's Head of Technical Strategy Mark Newton believes that gold tends to work well as real rates start dropping on disappointing economic data. He thinks gold and gold stocks look appealing as part of a balanced portfolio, expecting gold to rally to near $3,750 a troy ounce, which would represent a gain of 13% from May 8’s close.

4 Mexican Equities

Many investors are worried that the era of U.S. exceptionalism is near an end. While neither Lee nor Newton believe that is true, Newton does admit that some emerging markets make for a compelling investment opportunity right now, such as Mexico.
