April Outlook 2023
During March, the S&P 500 once again found technical support around 3800 and has bounced on declining bank contagion fears and a return of dovish Fed expectations. Investors are also beginning to digest economic data that is showing signs of weakening. The ongoing debate about the future path for Fed policy continues. With that being said, most are moving towards Chair Powell and Gang announcing a pause at the upcoming May meeting, but there remains much disagreement regarding what happens next — the immediate return to easing, or a period of status quo before another round of tightening. It seems like the odds of either outcome swing wildly with each economic release, and until there is a clear sign will likely keep the ongoing tug of war alive.
